In the South Western corner of Assam, a state in the North East India, a beautiful district with rich in history, heritage and culture is located, namely Dhubri. The headquarter of the district is situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, only river with a male name in India and was created by craving out Goalpara district on 1st July 1983. The Municipal Board in Dhubri was constituted in 1883 by the British regime, almost around hundred years before becoming a district.
The district has a geographical area of 2176 sq. km and the topography here is generally plain covered with patches of small hillocks like Tokrabandha, Chakrasila, Sonamukhi, Mahamaya and others, and some low lying Char areas. As famously known as the “Land of Rivers” the mighty river Brahmaputra flows through the District with various other tributaries viz. Gadadhar, Gangadhar, Gaurang etc. It is bounded both by inter-state border of West Bengal and inter-national border of Bangladesh. The nearest airport located at Rupsi was constructed during last World War by the British exclusively for military operation and is situated around 15 kilometres from the district head-quarter.
There are many important tourist attractions which makes the district popular among many others in the state. Mahamaya Dham, at Bogribari is about 30 kilometres east from Dhubri town and is next to very popular Kamakhya Dham situated in Guwahati and Madan-Mohan in Cooch Behar in its attraction to the pilgrims. The mother Mahamaya is widely accepted and worshipped by all the Hindus of Assam.
In the heart of the Dhubri town, the famous Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji is stuated. Shri Guru Nanak Ji visited this place in 1505 A.D. & met Mahapurush Shri Sankardeva during his way from Dhaka to Assam. Thereafter the 9th Sikh Guru Shri Tegh Bahadur came to this place and established this Gurudwara during 17th century. Sikh devotees from all over India and abroad assembles in this Gurudwara every year in the month of December to mark the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur as “Shaheed Diwas” with due solemnity and ceremony.
Asharikandi, a small village very famously known as one of the largest clusters of Terracota and Pottery makers in North-east India is situated around 14 kilometres east from the Dhubri town. The artistic skill, quality of Hiramati and age-old tradition of Kumbhakaras (potters) of Asharikandi has enabled to retain a separate identity of Asharikandi- style of Terracotta. HATIMA doll, a nationally and internationally acclaimed unique masterpiece of late Sarala Bala Devi, has brought much repute for Asharikandi and its unique and beautiful style of Terracotta.
Another famous tourist attraction is the Chakrasila Wildlife Sanctuary which largely falls under Kokrajhar district along with some adjacent areas of Dhubri district. With an area of 45.568 km2 (4556.8 hectares) the sanctuary was first declared as reserve forest in 1966 and on 14 July 1994 it was recognized with the status of sanctuary by the Government of Assam. It is famous for the Golden Langur and is the second protected habitat for Golden Langur in all over India. Different kinds of mammals, birds, twenty-three species of reptiles and more than forty species of butterfly are found in this sanctuary. Chinese Pangolin, Asiatic Jackal and Bengal Fox, Hornbills are also spotted here. It is also a safe haven for a variety of endangered animals. A total of 119 species of birds have been recorded in the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary.
Another historic place the “Rajbari” palace is situated on a hillock called Matiabag near the bank of river Gadadhar in Gauripur under Dhubri district. The palace is also popularly called Matiabag Palace or Hawakhana. The palace was once the seat of the Royal family lineage of Gauripur who held the administrative and directive power. The Hawakhana was also the residence of famous pre-independence actor and director, Pramathesh Chandra Barua. Besides him, the famous Goalpariya folk singer Padmashree Pratima Pandey Barua also lived her.
The district also witnessed glorious visits of many important and historically prominent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Srimanta Sankardeva, and Gopinath Bordoloi among others.
